In the Preface to Saint Josemaría Escrivá’s book The Way the following poem is found:
Read these counsels slowly.
Pause to meditate on these thoughts.
They are things that I whisper in your ear–
as a friend, as a brother, heard by God.
And they are being heard by God.
I won’t tell you anything new.
I will only stir your memory,
so that some thought will arise
and strike you;
and so you will better your life
and set out along ways of prayer
and of love.
And in the end you will be
a more worthy soul.
Within this book are 999 little passages of Scripture with anecdotes drawn from Escrivá’s life and work, snatches of conversation, and selections from his personal letters. Over the next two and three-quarters years I plan to post one passage per day along with an observation or brief meditation of my own on the day’s subject.
While I also own The Furrow (1000 passages) and The Forge (1055 passages) by Escrivá, I decided to journey along this Camino…this Way as it’s the one I’m most familiar with.
I believe the next three years will be even more trying and difficult than the previous decade. Times are tough, and they are getting tougher. It is my hope that by scaling back to “get back to the basics” as it were, I will find within myself the strength to endure those times and perhaps help others to do the same.
To that end in three years I hope I indeed will be a more worthy soul.
